Background

Tobias Hirt began his career with a carpentry apprenticeship in Schaffhausen (CH). He then studied Product Design at University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt, followed by a stay at Kyushu University, where he deepened his understanding of design and traditional Japanese craftsmanship. This combination of practical experience, conceptual training, and cross-cultural exposure shaped his approach: concept and construction evolve together, and thinking and making are inseparable.

Experience

Several years in the studio of Sebastian Herkner refined his sense of form, proportion, and cultural context. Here, he learned to translate strong ideas into carefully crafted objects, balancing narrative, function, and material presence. Further professional experiences expanded his perspective on processes and collaborations, while maintaining a consistent focus: material, detail, and atmosphere. Quality, he believes, reveals itself in the quiet moments—in joints, surfaces, weight, and balance.

Practice

Today, Studio HIRT TOBIAS develops projects in collaboration with partners as well as independently. The practice navigates fluidly between object and space, function and expression. Each piece is rationally constructed and functionally precise, yet imbued with a quiet emotional depth. The studio’s approach is defined by craft, intuition, and clarity, where art and design merge into a seamless practice.
